Staff Made - Jade's Sorrel Dress

Jade from TFS HQ recently popped off on an island getaway with her family to beautiful Fiji! She's had her eye on the Sorrel Dress pattern from Slow Circle and decided to make one to take on the trip, in a soft brown linen/cotton! Check out the details and photos below.

Jade's Project Notes

The Sorrel Dress pattern was featured in one of our TFS newsletters, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for summer! I am a huge fan of long bias cut dresses for work in the summer as they are easy to throw on and comfy to wear. I also loved how the dress can be made on the straight or bias grain.

I’ve previously made a pair of Sparrow Pants in this fabric, and these quickly became my favourite pants to wear. I love the colour and the beautiful drape of the fabric! It took on evening to cut out and sew the dress in full - so approximately 3-4 hours. I self-bound the dress so cutting and pressing the binding added extra time to the project but for the finish it gave it was well worth it! In total I used 3m of bias cut chocolate brown Midweight Linen/Cotton, and made a size 14.

The pattern was such a quick and easy sew! I opted to cut the fabric on the bias, so omitted the zip, which did speed up the sewing process and made for a much quicker and mindless sewing project. The binding finishes were satisfying to complete, I would recommend taking the time to get these perfect. I loved the suggestion to sew the bows, rather than tie them as the bows sit well and there’s no risk of them coming undone while wearing!

No major changes were made to this dress, however for a future make, I would raise the back keyhole to finish higher up to cover a bra strap. I have already made a second version, which was shorter and cut on the straight grain with a contrast bias binding. I would also love to create another long version cut on the bias, with the front keyhole omitted.

I wore this on holiday in Fiji, and it was perfect for dinner in the hot weather! I see this being worn often for work in the summer months, and also as a dress that can go from beach to lunch/dinner.
