We've spotted a bunch of bouncy bubble skirt makes recently, and thought we'd have a go at hacking our Make by TFS August Skirt pattern to match! We used an existing skirt, and adjusted the hem and lining in just a few easy steps. Check out the result below, kindly modelled by Frankie from our Online Store team.
Pattern Used — Make by TFS August Skirt
We used an existing August Skirt in a size 10 for this hack, which was originally made with Herringbone Stripe Cotton / Triacetate - Fawn Mix. To create a bubble lining, we added 1.25m of Soft Cotton Voile - Light Cream. The lining meterage you need will depend on the length you want your skirt to be and the amount of volume you prefer in the skirt. To prepare the skirt for the lining, we unpicked the inside of the waistband, leaving the outer waistband still attached. We trimmed the hem back to shorten the overall length of the skirt by approximately 20cm. To create the bubble lining, you need to cut two rectangular lining pieces; ours were roughly 43cm by 125cm. One piece gets cut in half width-ways, and the two halves become the back skirt lining. Overlock the short sides, and partially sew them together with a 1cm seam, leaving a gap for the zip in your August Skirt. Neaten the side seams of the other rectangle, and sew the front and back skirt lining pieces together. Gather the hem edges of both the main skirt and the lining, and with the right sides together. Join these pieces by sewing the right sides together, flip the lining over to the inside and sandwich the top edge into the waist band. Sew closed! There is flexibility with the amount of gathering you want in your hem, so you can chose to make an extra bubbly bubble if you wish by adding more gathers. As always with hacks, expect a little trial and error as you go!
